Monsters In the Night

The nuns boom “lights out”,
Like wardens at a state prison.
Orphans exchange solemn looks as they slide into their bunked tombs.
Darkness fills the orphanage halls,
Making rooms cold and quiet like a midnight grave yard.
The wicked full moon creeps from behind a dark cloud,
Transforming their beloved grounds keeper into a howling wolf.
Minutes tick passed, as they wait in fear
For the demon to make his presence.
The door screeches open,
Like a scream queen in a horror film.
Their innocent souls sob to the death sentence
Of his boots marching through the isle.
As the grounds ghoul creeps closer to his night prey,
They are each left paralyzed in their mummified sheets.
The eldest feels his hellfire graze her cheek
Before slinking down below her.
The bunk trembles with wrath as their sister’s humanity is shredded to unrepairable shards.
Seconds feel like hours, as they each hold their breath in fear
Of being caught by the boogeyman under their covers.
Their sister is released from her coffin,
Yet left like the undead of the vampire who cursed her.
The door slams shut to muffled cries of shame and anguish
That is their lullaby to slumbers of everlasting nightmares.
